Dirty Laundry

The pile is always there

In the corner of your eye

The colorful shirts, the nice pants, the fun socks

Items you’ve collected over time

Items that represent who you are

Decisions you’ve made, good and bad

They’re dirty

They need to be cleaned

They need help

However, the pile still sits there

In the corner of your eye

You change the path you walk around your room to avoid it

Out of sight, out of mind. What’s the harm in that??

You hope someone doesn’t stumble in and see it

You hope your cologne is strong enough to cover up the stench of the dirty pile

It’s always there though

In the corner of your eye

You know you need to do something about it

You know you need to pick it up

You know you need to quit ignoring it

You know things need to change

You know you need to do the laundry

But it’s still there, in the corner of your eye

They say once the laundry is clean you’ll feel better

You’ll feel better about yourself

You’ll start to feel like yourself

You’ll start to be yourself

Just put your big boy pants on and do it

How do you put your big boy pants on, though, when they’re in the pile??

How do you put your big boy pants on when you can’t even do the laundry??

And what about after that??

You have to dry it

Fold it

Hang it

Sort it

And repeat

Over

And over

And over

And over

And over

Is it worth it to do the laundry

Or just let it sit there

In the corner of your eye

Learn to live with it

Blame other people when they have an issue with it

Make it someone else’s problem because you never learned how to do the laundry

Learn to tiptoe around it

Ignore it

Get used just to putting on the dirty clothes and avoid people and hope no one notices

Just get used to what dirty laundry feels like. Make it your life

Hopefully it’ll disappear

Or hope someone will clean your laundry

It never disappears, though

No one else can clean it, though

You’re tired

Tired of hiding it

Tired of hoping others don’t notice

Tired of seeing how your dirty laundry hurts those you love

Tired of your pile of laundry no one else can clean but yourself

Only you can clean your dirty laundry

Are you going to clean your dirty laundry

Or are you going to continue altering your life to allow the laundry to stay
