Laugh Hard, Run Fast, Be Kind

One of my favorite shows of all time is Doctor Who. From the years of about 2012-2015 it was an obsession of mine. I always called myself The Doctor. Would make jokes about having my own blue box I called a TARDIS. Would quote the many lines I had memorized. I even wrote fan fiction Doctor Who tv episodes that I hope never see the light of day again. I ended up getting away from it due to a lack of ability to watch it as I didn’t have BBC America. Then, even when it became available, just a lack of taking care of myself to make time for it. I recently caught up with all the seasons because the 60th anniversary is coming out and I just finished Jodie Whitaker’s run as The Doctor (Yes The Doctor can be a woman and yes she did fantastic. Shut your mouth). I then decided to re-watch all the seasons when I had time because I realized not just how much I missed The Doctor, but how much I needed The Doctor. For those who don’t know, Doctor Who is a sci-fi tv show about an alien called The Doctor (no we never learn their name so don’t ask) who flies around in an old fashioned Blue Police Telephone Box that is called a TARDIS. TARDIS stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space. In short, it is a time traveling spaceship. The Doctor travels across time and space with their companions and saves worlds and universes. It is absolutely ridiculous and wonderful. I was obsessed the moment I started watching. I am sorry I ever made fun of it at first (My bad, Kenzie).
Steven Moffat sums up the importance of The Doctor better than I ever could with this quote: “But when they made this particular hero, they didn't give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things. They didn't give him a tank or a warship or a X-Wing Fighter, they gave him a phone box from which you can call for help. And they didn't give him a superpower, or pointy ears, or Heat Ray, they gave him an extra heart. They gave him two hearts and that is an extraordinary thing. There will never come a time when we don't need a hero like the Doctor.” I think that is why The Doctor was so interesting to me and why I wanted to be them so bad. They wanted to help people, make people laugh, and enjoy the small moments with people. They enjoyed life with those who they were with before their time was up because time is not forever. I’m writing this a few days after my Live in the Valley post (shameless plug to go read it), and The Doctor said to never ignore a coincidence. I don’t think it is a coincidence that these two posts are being written within a few days of each other. I don't think it is a coincidence that all this reflection and self realization happened after I started watching Doctor Who again. I don't think it is a coincidence that when I stopped watching Doctor Who that my focus on the Valley all but went away. I’m not sure where this will lead or what other realizations and reflections this will lead to, but I’m excited. Just like in the shows, The Doctor is there for me when I need them most. I just hope I can make them proud.
While there are TONS (and I mean TONS) of quotes I could close out with, I will end the post with this one: “Hate is always foolish. Love is always wise. Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind.” So, in between reading that book, go start an episode of Doctor Who. Start at the beginning or ask for recommendations. Andiamo.
